WVEL Travel/News Scope Now: The Illinois State Police Announces Higher Fines For Scott’s Law Violations In The New Year

“Attention all motorists, attention all motorists, violators of Scott’s Law will see heftier fines coming this New Year!”

Starting January 1, 2020, fines will be no less than $250 for first time offenders and no less than $750 for following offenses, according to the Illinois State Police.

If property damage is involved, the violator’s driver license will be suspended for anywhere between three to 12 months.

If an injury is involved, the license will be suspended for anywhere between six months and two years.

According to WEEK-TV, in 2019, the ISP has issued almost 6,300 citations for violating the Move Over Law, with 27 ISP stationary squad cars have been struck.

The number of citations issued is nearly 5,300 more than the combined totals of 2017 and 2018, according to the ISP.

This year also saw the death of two ISP troopers, Christopher Lambert and Brooke Jones-Story; due to violations of Scott’s Law.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said,

“Following Scott’s Law is a matter of life and death for our brave first responders who are just trying to do their jobs. The law is simple: slow down and move over if you see a first responder on the side of the road.”
