WVEL News Scope: State House Passes Bill To Name Peoria Street After Jim Thome

A bill to rename part of Route 24 after Peoria Native and former Major League Baseball Star Jim Thome, unanimously passes the State House.

According to cinewsnow.com, the bill, sponsored by State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth, would rename Route 24 from the intersection with South Adams in Bartonville to the intersection of 24 and Griswold in Peoria as Jim Thome Highway.

The bill now heads to the state senate.

Thome graduated from Limestone High School and Illinois Central College, before being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1989.

He retired from the major leagues in 2014, where he won numerous awards. He also ranks sixth all time with 612 home runs.
