Shoveling can cause injuries if physically unprepared; so if you will be shoveling out snow this Winter season, by all means, be careful!

Shoveling injuries are more common this time of year due to winter weather conditions.

Something as common as shoveling your driveway can leave you with a serious problem.

Shoveling is a cardio and strength workout, and just like any type of exercise, you can injure yourself if you don’t properly prepare and have the correct form.

According to the American Journal Of Emergency Medicine & KHQA-TV, some injuries that could occur include back injuries, shoulder pain, strained muscles, or you can even fall.

Chiropractor, Dr. Tyler Rickleman in Quincy said that it is vital to utilize your hips and avoid twisting, as too much twisting can cause a lower back problem.

“What we don’t want is someone pushing in the snow, bent over, and now twisting to the side. That’s going to hurt the low back and going to strain it a little bit,” said Chiropractor, Dr. Tyler Rickelman.

Chiropractors also suggest staying hydrated and keeping track of your heart rate if you haven’t done much physical activity.

The bottom line? Shoveling can be just as strenuous as going to the gym, and you have to be physically prepared before heading out to clear roads and driveways.
