When it comes to outward migration of cities in the Midwest, Illinois has no shortage of these areas seeing large numbers of residents departing.

According to Business Insider & WEEK-TV, with data collected from the U.S. Census Bureau, listed the top 20 cities in the Midwest with the largest outward migration totals from 2010-2018.

BI’s measurements used net migration to determine which cities were affected the most; “The number of people who moved into the metro area from some other part of the U.S. or another country, minus the number of people who left the metro area over that period.”

Illinois held nine of those spots, including the top three, the most out of any other Midwest state.

Danville was at No. 1 with a 6.7 percent net population loss due to outward migration, about 5,455 people, during that 8-year period.

Peoria was No. 6 on the list, losing 4.9 percent of the metro area population, 18,737 people, due to outward migration.

Peoria’s metro population count in 2010 was 379,186.

Decatur held the No. 2 ranking with a 6.5 percent loss of 7,220. Rockford was at No. 3 with a 5.8 percent population loss of 20,375.

Other Illinois cities:

*No. 8 – Kankakee, 4.7 percent loss — 5,386
*No. 10 – Chicago area, 3.9 percent loss — 365,909 people
*No. 12 – Carbondale-Marion, 3.3 percent loss — 4,116 people
*No. 13 – Bloomington, 2.8 percent loss — 5,169 people

The findings by Business Insider did not indicate where those moving out of a city ended up, only that the numbers found more people were departing, than moving in to a specified city.
