Peoria’s fire department is urging residents to remember their kids and pets in the backseat of their cars as they run errands this summer.

The National Safety Council & WEEK-TV say most heat related car deaths are because a parent forgot their kid or pet was in the back seat.

Peoria Operations Chief Jim Bachman said, “Children’s bodies heat up three-to-five times faster than an adult does. Smaller children and infants lack the ability to perspire like adults do so they have a more difficult time cooling off.”

Bachman recommends leaving something vital like a brief case or even a shoe in the back seat with the child so you will be less inclined to forget they’re there.

On a 90 degree day, the car can heat up to more than 100 degrees in just 10 minutes.
