An update to a 30-year-old law that could be life-saving; by 2022, Illinois homes still using smoke alarms with removable batteries will be updated.
Those homes will be required to install new 10-year sealed battery alarms.
Thanks to the latest technology, the battery of this new alarm doesn’t need to be replaced and cannot be removed.
Also, the batteries are hassle-free, have no late-night low battery chirps, and are not costly to replace.
The law, Public Act 200, was first passed in 2017 to update the Illinois Smoke Detector Act in order to reflect technological advances.
