Every year, the fourth Tuesday in September marks National Voter Registration Day and this year, popular sites like Google, Twitter, and Snapchat made an effort to get the word out with users.
In Peoria County, it seems to have worked.
“Our online voter registration numbers are way up. Just to give you an idea, yesterday we received 25 online registrations, today we have received a 128 so far,” said Assistant Executive Director for the Peoria County Elections Commission Elizabeth Gannon.
Though everyone is always going to “click the link,” and in an effort to get students registered to vote, Eureka College held a pop-up voter registration table.
“You know Snapchat. Facebook, and Twitter, those are passive ways of getting people to register it’s one of those things you don’t have to do it. By having physical students here that are friends. That are representatives of our student body, it’s a lot easier for us to have that face-to-face interaction,” said Eureka Student Body President Jack Casone.
What exactly do Illinois residents need in order to register to vote?
“If you’re going into a building you need two forms of id, one that shows your current address. If you are registering to vote online you need a current drivers license or a state id because it’s going to verify you through the secretary of states office,” Gannon said.
That is correct, if you have a state ID or drivers license, you may already be registered to vote in Illinois.
“So they’re automatically going to offer to register you to vote you would have to say ‘no thank you i don’t want to’ but if you have business at the DMV, voter registration is into that system it’s a part of that process now,” Gannon added.
