The John Deere Classic began life in 1971 as the Quad Cities Open. For its first four years, it was played at the Crow Valley Country Club in Davenport, IA. It became an official tour event in 1972.

In 1975, the event was renamed the Ed McMahon-Jaycees Quad Cities Open (through 1979), and moved to Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois. Title sponsors have included Miller Company (1982–1985), Hardee’s (1986–1994) and John Deere (1999-present). It stayed there until 1999 and in 2000, the event moved to the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, IL.

The John Deere Golf Classic will be taking place on July 10-16, 2017 in the Quad Cities.
