WVEL Celebrates Black History Month
Here are some Black history facts for February 4th:
1996 – J.C. Watts becomes the first African American selected to respond to a state of the union address.
1986 – A stamp of Sojourner Truth is issued by the U.S. Postal Service.
1971 – The National Guard is mobilized to quell rioting in Wilmington, North Carolina. Two people are killed and the riots continue until February 9th.
1969 – MPLA begins armed struggle against Portugal in Angola.
1913 – Rosa Parks was born. Her full name at birth was Rosa Louise McCauley.
1794 – France abolishes slavery.
